Roof boxes & bars hire

Roof boxes, roof bars and bicycle carriers, all in one place. Tell us what you want to carry and we’ll help you find a suitable setup.

Choose your extra space

Choose by the amount and shape of luggage, not litres alone. We will check tailgate clearance, bar spacing and the safe carrying limits of your vehicle before confirming a box.

Roof bars & fittings

Thule, Summit and G3 bars, hired on their own or with a roof box or tent. Most of our systems are Thule. On some vehicle models Thule does not offer a compatible option, so availability cannot be confirmed until we check the exact car and roof type.

Thule 598 bicycle carrier

Bring up to three bikes with our Thule 598 carriers. They are normally fitted to CampScotland roof bars. We may use customer-owned bars only when they are verified compatible Thule WingBar Evo bars. A roof box can be combined with no more than two carriers, using one compatible bar set charged once. Every setup remains subject to the vehicle, roof-load, bar and fitting limits. Unusual combinations are checked individually before we confirm the hire.

FIND THE RIGHT FIT

Which roof does your car have?

Rails run from front to back. Roof bars run across the car and carry the equipment. Use these simplified diagrams for now; we’ll replace them with CampScotland photographs later.

Diagram of raised roof rails with an open gap beneath the rail
Identification diagram: look for a clear gap beneath the rail.

Raised rails

Rails running along each side, with a visible gap between the rail and the roof. You can usually pass your fingers underneath the middle of the rail.

Diagram of flush roof rails sitting closely against the vehicle roof
Identification diagram: the rail sits against the roof with no open gap.

Flush rails

Rails fitted closely against the roof, with no open gap underneath. They can still stand above the roof surface and may be black or silver.

Diagram of a plain car roof with no roof rails
Identification diagram: no rails run along the roof.

Plain roof / no rails

No raised or flush rails. A suitable bar system may clamp around the door frame, depending on the vehicle. Check for covered mounting points before choosing this option.

Diagram showing fixed mounting points beneath small roof covers
Identification diagram: look for small covers or flaps in the roof.

Fixed mounting points

Specific mounting positions built into the roof, often beneath small covers or flaps. These can look like a plain roof when the covers are closed.

Diagram of a narrow recessed T-track running along the vehicle roof
Identification diagram: look for a narrow open or covered channel running along the roof.

T-track / roof track

A less common recessed track running from front to back. A compatible foot or adapter fits into the channel. If the track is covered, a clear roof photograph will help us identify it.

Have rain gutters or something different? Choose “Other / not sure” in the enquiry form. A roof photo is helpful if you’re unsure, but isn’t required if you can identify the type.

Want to check your vehicle first?

Use Thule’s vehicle compatibility guide ↗ to see which roof-bar systems Thule lists for your car. This is a general guide and does not confirm CampScotland stock or availability. If your vehicle is not listed, please still contact us because another suitable system may be available.

BEFORE YOU SET OFF

Useful answers.

How long does roof-bar and roof-box fitting take?

Usually around 10–30 minutes. The time depends on the vehicle, roof type and fitting system. We allow enough time to check the setup and explain its use.

How do you count hire days?

The collection day is not charged as a full hire day. For example, collecting on the 1st and returning on the 11th is counted as 10 hire days.

What should I tell you about my car?

Please provide the make, model, year, body style and roof type. If you cannot identify the roof, send a clear photograph showing the full roof and rails.

Can every roof box fit every car?

No. The vehicle, roof type, suitable bar system, bar spacing, roof-load limit and tailgate clearance all need to work together. Most of our systems are Thule, but Thule does not offer a compatible bar option for every car. We check availability before confirming the equipment.

What can I put in a roof box?

Roof boxes are best for bulky, lighter items. Loads must stay within the limits of the box, bars and vehicle, be spread evenly and be secured inside. We will explain the particular setup at collection.

What if my plans change or I return late?

Please contact us as early as possible. We aim to be flexible and customer-focused, but extensions depend on the equipment’s next booking. Any extra hire days are charged at the normal daily rate.

Let’s check the fit.

Send your car make, model, year and roof type. A photograph is optional if you can identify the roof. We’ll confirm compatible equipment, availability and the full price.
